Hello Columbus Pride Bands Family!
After weeks of preparation, and yet more uncertainty surrounding COVID, I am THRILLED to share with you our plans for a Fall Concert! Our theme for this concert is “Glad to be Back!” because, well, we are! (But also, if you have a better name for the theme, email me…) Our repertoire includes Frank Ticheli’s beautiful Amazing Grace, John Zdechlik’s Chorale and Shaker Dance, Omar Thomas’ Mother of a Revolution, and much more. We can’t wait to get started!
Below you will find information regarding rehearsals, performance plans, COVID mitigation, and more. Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions, and I can’t wait to make music with you all again soon!
We will start rehearsals on Tuesday, September 21st at King Avenue United Methodist Church. Our rehearsals run from 7:00pm-9:00pm, and will continue each Tuesday until our concert in early November.
A quick note about parking – since we last rehearsed at King Ave UMC, the parking plan in the area has changed. While the church does have some parking available, we will continue to overflow into the nearby street parking. Be sure to read street signs VERY carefully before you park! Neil Avenue near the church is now almost entirely pay-to-park, and you must pay using the ParkColumbus Mobile App. Parking within the neighborhood is permit-only. Read carefully, and choose your parking wisely!
Our planned performance date is Sunday, November 14th, tentatively planned for the brand new Watkins Memorial High School Performing Arts Center in Pataskala. While we did pursue our usual venues, they were booked for all of the possible performance weekends we identified. The new WMHS PAC features 801 seats and a large stage with Broadway spec sound and lighting capabilities, full fly space, and a full concert shell. It’s a beautiful venue that will serve us well this fall!
COVID safety is once again at the top of many conversations, and has certainly been present on the minds of our Board Members and Artistic Leadership. After much discussion we will follow the following protocols:
– All members performing this fall must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
– All members must wear a mask in church common areas, and are encouraged to wear a mask throughout rehearsal when not playing their instrument.
– We will set-up the band with as much space between chairs as possible in the space we are using (church basement)
– Members may choose to use bell covers or musicians’ masks, but they are not required.
We understand that the decision to require band members to be vaccinated may be controversial to some, but as a Board we felt it prudent to err on the side of health and safety of our members. Members can show their vaccination card or a photo of it clearly showing their name and vaccination status (please feel free to conceal birthdate or other personal info) to TJ Klopfstein, Board Vice President at your first rehearsal. This season we will be returning to our usual Dues structure – $20 per season or $50 for a full year (Fall through Pride). First-time performers are free for their first season.
Because it has been nearly two years since we last rehearsed as a concert band, we feel that this is a good time to send a fresh all-call for Section Leaders. Concert Band Section Leader responsibilities are largely administrative in nature, though some ability to lead musically is appreciated. Section leaders track attendance for their sections, and act as “first line” personnel for tracking membership and helping make sure questions and concerns are addressed or passed up to the Board or Artistic Leadership. Section Leaders also assist with part assignments and distributing music. Please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to be a section leader this fall (even if you were one in the past). You should also add September 14th to your calendar, because we will have a section leader meeting that evening.
